How do I put on & remove contact lenses?
Watch the video below for a quick how-to!
Is your eyesight getting worse each year? Ask us about myopia control.
If you are low to moderately myopic (nearsighted) and don’t want to wear contacts or glasses during the day or have a child whose prescription keeps getting worse each year, we have a solution. Orthokeratology or ortho-K is a nonsurgical, FDA-approved way to slow down or sometimes stop the yearly increase in myopia. You wear a specially fitted contact lens while sleeping and take it out during the day. Ask us about ortho-k.
The revolutionary soft lens, Misight, has also been clinically proven to slow down the progression of myopia (near-sightedness). You’d wear this soft lens at least 6 days a week for 10 hours a day. It has been proven that every diopter of myopia increases the chances of getting glaucoma, cataracts, myopic maculopathy, and decreases self-confidence. Misight is an advanced solution that delivers great results.
Myopia
Myopia or nearsightedness is a common refractive condition where you can see objects up close, but distant objects are blurry. Over 40% of the US population is myopic and it is estimated that by 2050 it will be over 50%. In the Asian population that number is closer to 75% and rising quickly.
The higher the amount of myopia the more likely you can get sight threatening diseases like:
- Retinal detachment
- Myopic maculopathy
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
Symptoms include:
- Eyestrain
- Headaches
- Squinting
For young children symptoms include:
- Squinting
- Unaware of distant objects
- Excessive blinking
- Frequent eye rubbing
- Sitting close to the TV
Causes of Myopia include:
- Genetics
- 1 parent myopic chances are 33%
- 2 parents chances are 50%
- 0 parents chances are 25%
- Prolonged close activity (lots of reading or near tasks)
- Screen time (lots of computer or cell phone use)
- Environment – not a lot of outdoor time. Increased sunlight has shown to decrease myopia
Treatments to slow down Myopia:
- Increase outdoor time
- Ortho-K
- Low dose atropine
- Misight soft contact lenses
Ortho-K/Orthokeratology
Ortho-K uses a specially fitted rigid gas permeable contact lens to flatten out the cornea. This causes a peripheral blur which stops the increase in the axial length of the eye- which then stops the increase in myopia. Patients sleep in the lens for a minimum of six hours nightly and then have good vision all day long without glasses or contact lenses. It is truly magic!
Misight daily soft contact lenses
Misight contact lenses are soft daily disposable contact lenses. They are worn during the day for a minimum of ten hours six days a week.
This also causes a peripheral blur which stops the increase in axial length of the eye- which then stops the increase in myopia.
Atropine drops
Lose dose atropine drops are put in the eyes for a few days a week. This is used in conjunction with eyeglasses. These drops work by competing for binding sites on different sites in the eye. This increases dopamine which prevents the eye from growing longer.
Side effects of atropine include blurry near vision and more sensitivity to light as it dilates the pupils.
Ask our doctors which treatment is right for your child.
Dr. Arnold and Dr. Orsini will help you decide whether contacts are a good solution for your eyes and provide you with the care you need to ensure that you have the best opportunity for a successful fit & healthy eyes.
